For the first 1/2 of class, you are going to do some research in preparation for our upcoming class debate.

You may have heard that the State of Texas is considering passing legislation (a law) that allows college students to carry guns on college campuses.  Review the following links and work to understand both sides of this issue. You may be asked to argue either side during our debate.  I expect you to have at least 3 points for and 3 points against this issues.  Your points must be written down on paper.

Task #1

Kids Philosophy Slam has a contest every year, and I want you to consider entering.

Read on for more details....

The Mission of the Kids Philosophy Slam is to give kids a voice and to inspire kids to think by unlocking their intellectual and creative potential through a unique and powerful philosophical forum.

2011 Topic:

Do the Ends Justify the Means?

Todays News, February 1st: The Greek playwright Sophocles wrote in Electra (c. 409 B.C.), 'The end excuses any evil,' a thought later rendered by the Roman poet Ovid as 'The result justifies the deed' in 'Heroides' (c. 10 B.C.). So in society today, the Kids Philosophy Slam asks the question: Do the ends justify the means? Deadline for entries is February 11, 2011.

Read the rules for the contest >> Here are the rules for 6th - 8th Grade

6th Grade — 8th Grade

This age category may write prose, poetry, create a song or musical composition, or write an essay of 500 words or less, answering the philosophical question: "Do the Ends Justify the Means?" If yes, explain or express how and why the ends justify the means in society. If no, explain or express how and why the ends do not justify the means in society. Essays may be based upon personal experiences, observations or through research and historical context. Musical compositions may be in written form, or recorded and submitted by CD. Judging will be based on the following criteria: Originality and creativity, strength of philosophical argument, spelling and grammar. A national winner will be chosen from each grade. A national musical winner will also be selected.

The Kids Philosophy Slam has been featured on: The NBC Today Show, The New York Times, National Public Radio, Christian Science Monitor and TIME Magazine for Kids

Listen to National Public Radio Weekend Edition Saturday, May 6, 2006 - Scott Simon on National Public Radio talks to Ryan Adams, 16, a finalist in the 2006 Kids Philosophy Slam in Washington, D.C.

The 2010 Most Philosophical Student in America was: Achutha Raman of Massachusetts.
