PLATO’S PARABLE OF THE CAVE

Purpose of the assignment:

  1. 1. introduce students to this important piece of Western Literature

  2. 2.critical reading

What students will do:


First, students will try to make sense of the pictures of Plato’s cave.


Next, students (on their own) will read the conversation between Socrates & Glaucon regarding the Parable of the Cave and try to make sense of what is being said.


Then, students will work in groups to help each other interpret the text.


Afterwards, Mr. Harris will point out some of the key components of the text through various class discussions and activities.

What students should be able to do at the completion of this unit:

  2. BulletDraw, label and define all the major elements of Plato’s Cave

  3. BulletExplain what the parable is attempting to present to its readers

  4. BulletWork in a group and develop a drawing & explanation of a modern day “reinterpretation” of Plato’s cave

  5. BulletCompare and contrast Plato’s Cave with the “Matrix” movie
