Tom sez, "Our Stanford Creative Writing class wrote and illustrated a 224 page Graphic Novel this past quarter, and now it's up on the web. The story concerns the phenomenon of acid attacks in Cambodia, especially against women. We made the Graphic Novel in 6 weeks, with a collaboration among 17 students in creative writing, art, and design." (Thanks, Tom!)

Hello Students:

There are 2 tasks lined up for you today.

#1 - visit www.cnn.com/studentnews and listen to today’s news report.  If you do not have your earbuds, then please read the transcript.

#2 - You may visit any link at this site: http://www.brainbackbend.com/BrainBackBend/Graphic_Novels.html

-------------------------------

Hello Students:

There are 3 tasks lined up for you today. If you have already selected your movie line, then you can skip #3.

#1 - visit www.cnn.com/studentnews and listen to today’s news report.  If you do not have your earbuds, then please read the transcript.

#2 - You may visit any link at this site: http://www.brainbackbend.com/BrainBackBend/Graphic_Novels.html

Choose a television show or movie you have seen within the last few weeks, and compare and contrast the script with the show/movie.  Does the script read like the show/movie?  How is it the same or different from the show/movie?

#3 - if you do not already have your movie line selected & memorized, please do redo this assignment:

Visit the links below, and select one movie line for you to memorize, rehearse, and present to the class.  Additionally, you will need to know the following:

The answer to question #1 is required, and your answers

to questions #2 & #3 are optional, but recommended:

REQUIRED

1. The name of the actor & movie(s) containing your famous movie lines.

OPTIONAL

  1. 18.The name of the movie character who speaks your line in the movie, and

  2. 19.The context in the movie in which the line is spoken.  Obviously, for this one, you either have to see the movie or do some online research about that scene in the movie.

You can find movie lines here:

Wikipedia’s Entry for Famous Movie Lines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI's_100_Years...100_Movie_Quotes

Movie Quotes here: http://www.filmsite.org/greatfilmquotes.html

Top 10 Movie Quotes here: http://www.filmsite.org/topquotes.html

OPTIONAL

You get Super Bonus points if you choose lines from movies we have viewed in class.

Finally,

You have the opportunity to present your movie lines to the class.  I have plans to film students presenting their lines and show the film at the Falcon Media Festival.  And...of course, you will be expected to present your lines with respect to how the writer intended the actor to convey the meaning of the words within your lines.  Thus, you cannot simply memorize the lines and present them without feeling, emotion or any sense of the context in which they were delivered by the actor during the filming of the movie.  This means that you will have to understand the meaning of those lines and what those words were intended to do and mean within the film.

Happy Tuesday, Fulmore Comics & Graphic Novel Students.

Today you will get the chance to use an online animation program.

First, however, if you are on Twitter, you will get bonus points for following BrainBackBend.  So, if you are on Twitter, access you Twitter account now, and follow BrainBackBend. Go here for Twitter >>> www.twitter.com

Second, You are invited to explore the animation link below. To save your work, you will need to sign up for an account  - so be prepared to sign up for an account.  For today, I will not be providing direct instruction for this site. Sometimes, you learn best just through experimentation and trial and error.

To make animations go here >>> www.goanimate.com

For your first project, please make a short video/animation related to the theme of music.  For example you can make an animation about someone learning how to play music, or make an animation about a band giving a concert.  These are just suggestions, you can choose whatever topic interests you; it does not have to be about music.

Remember, we are having a film festival on May 21st, and the movies/videos that you make in class today, may end up in the festival.
